課程概述

This course is designed to improve the English ability of the students through literary appreciation and various language-training practices. We will start with two short stories, “Araby” by James Joyce and “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, and move on to David Henry Hwang’s M Butterfly. Topics on current social and cultural issues will be brought into class discussion to stimulate a back-and-forth collaborative leaning process. All the lectures and discussions will be conducted in English.

 1. To help students to analyze and appreciate English literary works
2. To facilitate students to articulate their ideas in English
3. To engage students in intellectual debates and critical thinking
 
課程要求
 This discussion session will focus on integrated skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing. Miscellaneous materials from contemporary culture will be chosen to facilitate small group discussion. Students are expected to grasp the gist of each material given, look for details, make educated inferences, formulate personal opinions, compare/contrast others’ ideas, and present the result of group discussion. Each member in the group will take turns to deliver answers. Therefore, punctuality, attendance and participation in the discussion are required of every single student in this course. The aim is to bring the students up to the level of using English in a formal, academic setting on the one hand, and to familiarize them with essential skills of comprehension and communication in general on the other hand.
